Healthy Cooking The OPR Way

by Claytoven Richardson

Recipe ImageDACA's award winning Chef Laurence Jackson did a fabulous presentation on Friday, May 20th during The City of Oakland Department of Human Resources Management's first ever, "Healthy Cooking Demo - Healthy Cooking 101". Erika Turner of DHRM, and Event Coordinator commented, "The cooking class was a huge success and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Chef Laurence was wonderful!!!" As a result of that success, and in homage to the incredible department to which we belong (Oakland Parks and Recreation-OPR) DACA is pleased to announce that we will be sharing with you a series of simple gourmet recipes (one every month) entitled, "Healthy Living The OPR Way". The first recipe (Recipe #001 - May 2016) is the one Chef Laurence used during the event on the 20th. We hope that you enjoy it.

by Kola Thomas

Larrolyn Ford PhotoWe congratulate and wish to present a Huge TA-DA to Larrolyn Parms-Ford, one of DACA's early students who is now graduating with a Bachelors degree in Music Performance and Theater from Mills College. Yes, DACA provided the opportunity and now the world is open to her to fly like an eagle. Many of us supported her with our presence at her Senior Thesis Concert - Class of 2016, which took place on Friday, May 6 at the Music Department, Mills College; and at her graduation on Saturday, May 14.

We intend to host a Reception for Larrolyn soon at DACA and hope you can join us in felicitating. When one succeeds, all of us succeed together!!! Special thank to Councilmember Desley Brooks, and all members of Staff at DACA and OPR!!!

Summer Reflections

by Joy Sledge

Zuni-Assata PhotoThis summer at DACA, we had two incredible sisters (Zuni and Assata Mosley-Moon) that participated in both of our 5 week Summer Day Camps. Zuni participated in the Culinary Track, which included Culinary Arts and Urban Gardening for the first summer session. Then she made a do-it-yourself (DIY) video of a baking project in the second summer session as a part of the Digital Video/Music Track. On the other hand, her sister, Assata spent both sessions in the Digital Video/Music Track and made two DIY videos of her arts and crafts jewelry. Assata was a true entrepreneur making her jewelry at the center and selling them to other members and staff. See more...
